Welcome to the "farming" side of JJD Ranch. Just like most small ranches in our area have always done, we have what some would call a "kitchen" garden. Those are the places on the ranch that we have set aside to grow things like fruits, veggies, herbs / spices, and nuts. It is where we grow, like a farmer would, the things that complement our main activity and make our meals close to complete.
We wish we could say we were self-sufficient. But we simply are not quire big enough to be. But, then farmers and ranchers in this area throughout time have worked together and shared produce with each other so that different operations could produce different things. Then through shared commerce, everyone had access to what (s)he would need. Some grew cotton; some grew grains; some grew hay; some grew large food crops; and some ranched livestock. But almost everyone had at least some of the basics. The rancher had a kitchen garden, and the farmer had maybe a milk cow, or a couple of goats.
And, so, at JJD Ranch, while our main product is grassfed and pastured beef and lamb, we do grow food bearing trees and bushes as well as a few food producing plants.
