We are a small family owned ranching operation that is located just north of Providence Village, Texas. We pasture raise both sheep and cattle. Grazing space takes up most of our small piece of land. However, in addition to ranching, just as did small ranchers in this area in the past, we also grow and/or produce other foodstuffs to complement our meats. So, we have small garden areas on the property where we raise vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices, and even some things you might not regularly think to eat such as edible flowers and cacti.
Our goal is to bring interesting and healthy foods to both our table and yours. We also hope to help you experience some of the historical ranching, farming, and even eating practices of our area. We use what we produce ourselves, and we sell our excess to the general public. We also both grow and prepare some things to order for you. Because we are a very small operation, we often have limited inventory of most of the things that we sell.
So, we focus on producing foods that are highly compatible with our local growing environment. While we do not object to natural cross breeding methods as a way to produce a better food product, we do reject the idea that bio-engineering our food sources at the DNA level (commonly referred to as GMO) can produce something that is somehow more healthy for us than what is available to us through natural development. We also object to the idea of stripping foods of nutrients and then replacing what has been stripped away with other nutrients. In short, we believe that our Creator designed our food sources to meet our needs perfectly. So, through use of tried and true ranching and farming methods that have been used to grow those perfectly designed foods, we believe that we are producing the foods that are in alignment with the things our bodies typically need.
We work hard to ensure that we are raising our livestock and growing our plants in environments that are natural for our area. When we purchase products to use in the foods we produce for you, we do our best to use items that have been minimally processed. And, when we fertillize, control for pests, and/or amend our soils, we use natural products and/or products that have been approved for organic use whenever possible.
In addition to bringing you the most nutritious naturally grown foods that we can, we also believe that food should be an attractive central part of many of your social occasions. Whether you are hosting a big gathering or just a sweet little family night dinner, we think your table should boast foods that are attractive and maybe even a little fun. So, we focus on growing and producing things that you will probably not find in just any local grocery store. By focusing on what has been historically raised in our area, we are able to bring some interest to your dining experiences with pastured meats, heirloom vegetables, savory herbs, and even some remarkable foodstuffs that you might not think to eat on a regular basis such as cacti and edible flowers. In our Ranch Recipes section, you will find, free to you, suggestions and recipes for how to use some of the things we produce.
And finally, we believe that food should be used to nourish our bodies and to help keep our bodies healthy. So while we are neither nutritionists nor medical professionals, we are always happy to help you get information about the potential health benefits of all of the items we produce. We can not advise you ourselves, but we will help you find sources of information that will help you understand the connections between the foods we eat and our health.
Pastured Meats - We are, first and foremost, a ranch. The majority of our operation is focused on producing the highest quality meats possible. We raise all of our livestock in a natural sustainable environment where they are free to graze on pasture that is primarily grasses and other forage that are simply native to our area. For pictures of our livestock and more information about the health benefits of our meats, take our virtual Pastured Meats Tour.
- Our grass fed beef comes mostly from our black angus cattle, but we also have some angus/belted galloway mixes. Both of these cattle breeds produce meat that is very high in healthy omega3's when they are grass fed, as are ours.
- Our pastured lamb is from our painted desert sheep. The meat tends to have a milder flavor with less of the flavor that is often associated with mutton instead of lamb.
- Our yard bird poultry are currently exclusively guinea fowl. We do not currently breed our guineas for meat, but we have plans to do so in the future.
- Our year round produce is especially important to maintaining healthy nutrient intake during times of the year when our seasonal produce is simply not available such as in the early part of the growing season when our seasonal produce is still only tiny baby plants. Our year round produce includes all items that can be grown inside our grow room and harvested year round such as, among other items, micro-greens and micro-herbs which are eaten as baby plants among other items. If you would like to know more about our grow room operation, please take a virtual tour of our Year Round Fresh produce.
- Our seasonal produce is grown in areas that we call our Ranch Gardens where we grow fresh vegetables, fruits, cacti, edible flowers, and herbs and spices. We do not currently "green house", so our seasonal fresh produce is grown at the optimal time of year to produce happy healthy plants in this area. That means the produce from those plants is only available when it is in season or shortly thereafter. Take a virtual tour of our Ranch Gardens to see what we grow seasonally and to learn when you might expect it to be available for sale.
- Our remarkable foodstuff is well, pretty remarkable. It is remarkable because it is things that you may not normally think of eating but that has long been enjoyed as foodstuff by people in our area. We consider our remarkable food stuff to include things like edible flowers, fresh herbs and spices, and even things like cacti and a few other "desert plants" that grow well in this part of Texas. To learn more, take a virtual tour of our Remarkable Foodstuff.
Cottage Foods - In addition to selling foods you can use to produce your own wonderful recipes, we can do some of the work for you by preparing ready to eat or ready to use foods under the Texas Cottage Foods Laws. Whether you are looking for dried fruits or vegetables to use out of season; fresh baked bread for the week; specialty jams or jellies; a homemade coffee cake or sweet bread for Saturday morning brunch; packets of soups and teas ready to steep in a cup; or just some really tasty and healthy herbs and spices that have already been dried for you, chances are good you will find them available amongst our wide variety of Cottage Foods. Learn more about what we make and how we sell by taking our Cottage Foods Tour.
- Baked Goods We bake both savory and sweet; both yeasty breads and quick breads, cookies, cakes, pies, cobblers, and some less well known old fashioned baked goods like buckles. If you want fresh from the oven, placing a special order is the way to go. But, most of our baked goods freeze well, so we often have a good variety for sale from our freezers as well.
- Canned Foods We make jams, jellies, salsas, and sauces with our fresh produce. We try to make some unusual varieties that you cannot find in just any store, but even just our plain old blackberry jam is going to beat the store brand hands down because it is made with our fresh wild blackberries and minimally processed non GMO all natural pure cane sugar.
- Dehydrated Items From dried fruits and veggies to packets of soup mix that can be used to make a dip or steeped in a cup, we offer a wide variety of dehydrated foods. Many of our edible flowers find their way into our teas, and we have a good variety of dried herbs and spices to use in your own cooking, some of which can only be found in specialty stores.
We intentionally have a very small customer base. Our products are only available to those who are able to shop and / or take delivery locally within our area. We are a small ranch / farm, so we simply do not produce enough to sell in a wider market. Many of our customers prefer to shop locally and appreciate the efforts of small ranchers / farmers like us. So it makes us very happy that we get to know our customers on a more personal level. We know that those who like to shop our products often look for local farmers markets. We provide the "between the markets" shopping opportunity. We are here to provide the farmers market quality of goods without having to wait for the next market to be open.
In addition to getting to know each of our customers on a personal level, we encourage the kind of community development that has always been an integral part of small ranching and farming communities in this area. So, we also do our best to help our customers get to know each other through some of the things we do for them. The following is a list of things our customers enjoy beyond just the opportunity to come and shop with us.
- Home Page Announcements We post two different kinds of announcements on our home page.
In the center of the page you will see: "We are pleased to announce ...." where we post the things you will most want to know. Sometimes, it will contain dates and times about special events, and other times it will just be about the most recent developments at JJD.
Just under the block that contains our online shopping links, you may find an emergency announcement. There will only be an announcement there if something is changing suddenly. For example, if we have scheduled a special event, and a big ole Texas thunderstorm with high winds rolls in unexpectedly (as they sometimes do), we will post that the event is canceled or ending early due to bad weather. There will not be an announcement there if nothing unusual is happening.
- Social Media We have a strong presence on several social media platforms, and we are building others. We use social media to both let you know what it currently happening and to let you know if something changes suddenly. We also use social media to communicate individually with customers and to take a part in our local communities. You can find us on both Facebook and Instagram using @jjdranchtx
- Contact Us And, of course, we always love to hear from you as well. Follow the contact us link here or the contact us link from the top of any of our pages to find out how you can reach out to us.
- In person If you live near by, give us a call. We are always happy to have you come by to visit our animals and to see how things are growing here at JJD Ranch. Because we are a small operation, we do ask that you call and make an appointment. We might be at the feed store or out "mendin' fences" if you just stop by. We do not do formal tours, but we are always happy to walk about with you and show you things. It is important to note that our animals are livestock. They are not pets. Please do not expect to feed them or go in with them. But we are always happy to let you enjoy them from "the other side of the fence".
- Virtual No time to drop by? Or do you live too far away but would still like to see what is going on here at JJD Ranch? Drop in anytime for our virtual tours. We would love to hear your feedback about us. We are on both Facebook and Instagram - @jjdranctx or send us an email. We hope you enjoy learning about our place, and we look forward to hearing from you.
